Help Her

I am Pastor Josphine Kolala of Shalom Christian Centre in Kawama. There are many reasons why I am involved in the fight against HIV and AIDS. But if I were to choose just one reason, it would be that every person should hear the good news of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I am one of the 288 church leaders who have been privileged to undergo the Transformation Journey Course that is offered by Jubilee Centre in partnership with Willow Creek, Southridge and Ridgepoint Churches in the USA. The training has helped me how to identify what needs to change in the community and how the church and community can work together in developing a vision for the future and planning how we can bring about this change in the community.

Photo: Pastor Josphine Kolala on the left holding a map of a better Chifubu community

Because of this training I saw the need to engage my local government on issues related to HIV and AIDS. The provincial government saw my passion and they invited me to join the Provincial Organizing Committee tasked to organize activities of International Women’s Day’s in March last year. Because of my presence the meetings started with and ended with prayer. And because of my presence the Committee recognized the need for Biblical teaching on morality during the celebration. I was given the task to plan for this activities and I mobilized the churches in the Jubilee Centre Network and went into the markets to preach the gospel, and share on the importance of abstinence. I also organized the women drama group from the churches to come share the hope we have in Christ to over 3000 people on a single day.

I have passed the training I learnt in Strategic planning to others churches in my denomination. My Bishop who at first thought I was up to nothing good, because of my commitment and drive to see that all our churches articulate the vision and strategy to the members now recognizes me as one of his key leaders. All this happened because of the lessons learnt that bringing change in not easy but we must do it with gentleness and patience.

Thank you to each one of you who has been part of this transformation journey that is changing the way I do church and live my Christian life.

Academic Essay

I have been hoping and planning to earn an Honours in Business Management for the past 3 years since when I started studying Business Management with the Association of Business Executives (ABE) 108_2933and am excited to now be on the cusp of making that dream a reality. I’ve come a long way from the painfully studying in un electrified college, studying in candles, and managed to get distinctions. Through the challenges and goals I have set for myself I have grown into a confident, thoughtful, and respected leader at my workplace and in my personal life, and I know that these new skills will serve me well as I embark on this next scholastic challenge and the career I see before me in business management. .

I Have chosen this specific business management program because of its international focus, group work, emphasis on the business environment/ behaviour and it’s rich skills in being a successful entrepreneur. I see this as perfectly instep with my goal of pursuing a career in management consulting. Over the past few years I have overcome my shyness in the workplace and it is now commonplace for me to lead meetings and advise the CEO of the company I work for on the financial matters that are my sole responsibility and core strength. Continued group work with my fellow students from various backgrounds will serve to cement my new-found confidence in my own abilities and ideas. My interest in international business first sparked during my study with ABE at advanced Diploma.

If admitted to the program, I will bring with me my enthusiasm, dedication, and a stalwart work ethic. I am proud of what I have accomplished thus far in my life and see much of it as a stepping stone toward a successful future in the business world. I now need to expand my skill set beyond its current level and I see the curriculum offered at Leed Metropolitan University as the perfect way to do so.

Thank you so much for your contributions and efforts in my life

Dear Pastor Temfwe,

Happy New Year!

I am writing this letter from the bottom of heart. I am delighted that I am part of the wonderful team at Jubilee Centre. I am so humbled by your humility and brokenness to see transformation in the lives of the people you work with and the people in the community. This is evident in the way you have helped me.

Daniel DakaYou saw the potential in and nurtured it. You started by training me as a peer educator (through purity club) in 2004, then as a video shooter and editor in 2005 and later as a citizen journalist in 2008. You have continued to train me in other programs too. I am ever grateful for the mentorship and support that you provide to me and the way you treat me just like you own son.

Photo: Me before going to Church

It has been more than 4 years since I shifted from Mapalo Community to Jubilee Centre Guest house cottage in Kansenshi. It’s in this period that I have now completed an Advanced Diploma in Business Management  (with Association of Business Executives –UK) and have built a house. This achievement could not have been possible without your heart to see me flourish physically and spiritually. You have allowed me to stay in that house without paying any rent or utility bills; this can only be the hand of God pastor. As a result of this amazing heart you have for me I saved money to pay for tuitions, exams and build a house.

As that was not enough, you even extended your kindness by helping me with K500 000 to top for my exam fees last semester.

I have enjoyed each module of the project management, organization behaviour, International Business and strategic planning. As a result of my studies, I have gained a wider knowledge in areas such as communication skills, Monitoring and evaluation and good report/letter writing. Business Management has significantly impacted my day-to-day work; I regularly apply the new skills, new techniques and new ideas I have learned to practical business situations as witnessed during Jubilee Centre Staff retreat in sustainable development.

Your love to see me prosper as given me hope to do a Bachelor of Commerce in Management and later do a Masters in Project Management to improve storytelling to our partners, assist in planning for programs here at Jubilee Centre and resource mobilization.

I am currently enrolled at University of South Africa in Bachelor of Commerce in Management. I never ever dreamt that I will attain tertiary education but with the hand of God indeed nothing is impossible with God.

I am growing spiritually too as I am in prayer and fasting for 4 weeks. I am a committed member at church as they want me to spearhead the media ministry and they also want me to be the youth chairman.

Pastor always remember that your work in the LORD is not in vain and I always look unto you as my personal mentor. Our daily devotion at work has helped me to understand the word of God in another dimension with foresight.

Thank you so much for your contributions and efforts in my life.

With a thankful heart

JC September – December 2011 Newsletter

A GENTLE REVOLUTION

Over four years ago, JC understood that if the church was to be the salt of the earth and light of the world it cannot continue to do the church as usual. By the grace of God 288 church leaders from 94 churches rose up to the challenge and have in the last three years been attending Transformational Journey seminars were they are learning what it means to stand up to proclaim and demonstrate the clip_image002love of God in communities with extreme human needs.

Last October the JC team of Lawrence Temfwe, Peter Mwakalombe and Kabwe Kabwe – Willow Creek Country Manager were privileged to be joined by a team of four people who between them have over 90 years of ministry as leaders at Willow Creek Church – Betty Schimdt, Steve Bartz, Dan Lovaglia and Scott Pedersen to address the theme of Biblical and Effective Church Governance.

The subject on church discipline raised a hot debate. In one discussion a pastor stated, “How do you discipline a major tither? You can’t because if you do, you stop eating.” Another stated, “Instead of representing God in our discipline of erring members, the pastor is caught up in his own agenda of getting rich and the church slowly loses its position as the moral fibre of the nation.”

Photo: Elder Steve teaching during Transformational Journey at JC Conference Hall.

The facilitators, however, did offer practical teaching from God’s Word that equipped church leaders in how to represent God to the culture by penetrating every level of society. In his concluding remarks a participant Bishop David Ngona said, “Our churches and communities are experiencing a new spiritual birth because of these trainings that are helping us lead our churches with servant attitudes and address issues of discipline from a godly perspective.”

“NOT ON MY WATCH” GLS ROCKS ZAMBIA LEADERS

“Not on my watch” stated, Meluse Masuwa a Child Development Officer with Jubilee Centre when she heard Michelle Rhee. Michelle was one of the speakers at Global Leadership Summits which clip_image004were held in Lusaka, Ndola and Livingstone and presented via videocast. Michelle shared in her testimony how as Chancellor of Washington, DC school district she was unwilling to allow her schools under her watch continue as the worst performing school system in the US. After listening to how Michelle did it, Meluse retorted with tears in her eyes, “On my watch, I am not going to allow children be taught by untrained teachers in our community schools that are ran by churches in our networks.” The GLS was started in 1995 by Bill Hybels Senior Pastor of Willow Creek following a God given prompting to help raise and develop the spiritual gift of leadership in the local church. A participant beautifully defined GLS this way:

Photo: Participants at GLS 2011 at Bread of Life Ndola

“I have become apprehensive about attending Christian conferences … I was pleasantly surprised of how wonderful the summit was organised. Your team was wonderful. The meeting started and ended on time. The teachings were engaging, relevant to the needs of this present age and challenging. I am revitalized and emboldened. The messages demanded action; everybody can do something to make the ‘Kingdom come’. I am excited because I have already dug some ditches and God is going fill them in ways I do not know,” Mrs. Chanda Chilongoshi (business woman).

GETTING TO ZERO NEW HIV INFECTIONS

On the first of December, World AIDS Day is celebrated. Jubilee Centre is committee member for the District AIDS Task Force that prepares for this commemoration. All the network churches participate in the activities at local level. The theme for this year was Zero new infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS-Related deaths.

“This day is an opportunity for people to unite in the fight against HIV/AIDS, to remember those who have died of the disease and to review efforts being made to overcome,” stated Agnes Zalila the Care and Compassion Coordinator at JC.

clip_image006During the week of AIDS awareness JC focused on couples testing. They employed mass media, inviting couples for testing. In all 90 couples tested in a single day. The counselors were provided by the network of churches and all of them have been trained in psychosocial counseling through JC capacity building program.

Martha Temfwe who was one of the counselors stated, “I wish more churches would understand what we are up against. For zero new infection to happen every church on the face of Zambia must passionately be involved.”

Photo: Volunteers during World AIDS day

Charity Chileshe a mother of three testified during candle light service were 450 people gathered at Lilanda Catholic church in Lusaka, “I have lived with HIV for over 4 years now but most importantly is that my baby has lived without breast milk but mainly on supplementary food that includes high energized protein supplement (HEPS) through JC support. When I was told at the clinic that I should find an alternative way of feeding my baby due to my HIV status I did not know how I was going to manage that. But I thank God around the same period the positive living support group to which I was trained on how to make HEPS and my baby was one of the beneficiaries.”

PASTOR TEMFWE IN MOROCCO AT THE UN CONVENTION AGAINST CORRUPTION (UNCAC)

Pastor Temfwe was one of the team members that was invited by the UK based TEARFUND to attend at United Convention Against Corruption held in Morocco, clip_image008Marrakesh in October. At a press briefing hosted by Transparent International he said that:

“It’s in everyone’s interests to tackle corruption – so we need the broadest coalition and most effective mechanisms possible. After all our Lord Jesus Christ is called the Advocate because he not only pleads for our salvation but also desires that we enjoy life to the full as family, as community and as nation. His followers must do no less by advocating for a nation free of corruption, is just, and cares for the needy children, widows and the poor who are most affected by corruption.”

WILLOW CREEK INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TEAM AT JC

Jubilee Centre was privileged to host an IT team from Willow Creek from 10th -16th September 2011. The training has enhanced the Staff computer skills which have added quality to staff report writing skills.

“I now understand better how to use Microsoft word, PowerPoint and emails. This is the only formal training I have ever received in computers. I am ever grateful to Willow Creek for the partnership,” stated Pastor Chris Chanda.

“My goodness this training has really re-enforced my computer skills, they indeed came at the right time. I hope and pray that the training will be an annual activity,” said Sister Jenipher Chibeka JC Finance and Administration Manager.

JC Microfinance project

JC has been able to see the gap between lower income people of Zambia and the poorest of the poor that cannot get a loan from Micro Finance Institutions which would be able to enhance their living clip_image010standard hence birthing the micro finance project. JC is playing a role of a catalyst in self sustaining church development through this initiative to boost whatever business church members are involved in to better their living standards.

We have started the project with Chifubu network of churches. Five churches have received the loans and 44 church members have benefited from Chifubu.

Cornelius Kasalwe a member of Gospel Missions church with the loan he got, he was able to procure a larger amount of fish (kapenta) to sell in the market, more material for the store (sewing material), and even got some groceries to sell (because this is what sells the most in that community). This has allowed him to make a larger profit margin as compared to what he used to. Cornelius said, “I am so grateful that I have been given this opportunity to better myself and my family, praise be to God. My family is now saving more money monthly than we have done in the past.”

Photo: Cornelius and his daughters at the store

“I am really astounded and encouraged at what some of the loan recipients have been able to produce or amplify with the money given, it really goes to show that a little used the right way can make an incomprehensible difference,” Stated Lawrence Temfwe Jr. who is volunteer in the program.

Starting the Journey of Life

JC has continued with workshops on counselling and child rights in order to help children come to terms with their grief and loss, help them face life’s challenges with great tenacity and resilience and clip_image012help them tell their stories fully, clearly and honestly to encourage others going through a similar situation.

Recently, JC in partnership with TEARFUND conducted a workshop for 27 orphans under the theme Starting the Journey of Life. At the end of the workshop held at Northern Technical College each child walked away with a pair of new shoes.

“I am happy I came to this training for counselling because now I feel free. Before I came here I was so heavy in my heart, I had no one to talk to. Here I have met my fellow orphans and I feel encouraged because I know that I am not the only one passing through challenges,” said Arthur Phiri from Faith Tabernacle in George.

Jubilee Centre Christmas Messages

Jubilee Centre Christmas tree

This extra-special greeting contains a touch of warmth; It comes to you to kindly say thank you so much for you prayers, encouragement and partnership.

Thinking of you and wishing you all the beauty and joy of Christmas.

Happy Christmas

One gift we received this week at Jubilee Centre was Kellye Fabian, a lawyer who volunteers with Willow Creek Church legal services in their Justice and Compassion Ministry. We invited her to come DSCN0986and help us develop our Seeking Justice and Compassion Policy. In the morning she led devotion for staff she asked two questions. “What is best gift you have ever reason from another person? And what is the best gift you have ever given to another person?”

As a family one of the greatest gifts we have received this year is a house. This year we moved into our own home. Without your gifts and prayers we would never have moved into our won home. Thank you for being part of this gift to us. As for the gift we have given. We have continued to give ourselves to God by encouraging the church in the nation to stand together behind a shared vision of seeing transformation in individuals and in our communities as we proclaim and demonstrate the love of Christ to a broken world. One pastor put it this way, “The training I have received at Jubilee Centre has offered me opportunity to help people I used to pass by get connected to God, the church and to ways to make a difference in the world.”

Jubilee Centre has not been untouched by the global financial crisis affecting the world. Yet even in this situation we have continued to see God’s provision to meet our program and staff needs. We have worked hard to improve our stewardship that resources can reach further. Thank for praying and sacrificial giving and capacity building. The staff of Jubilee Centre continue to follow the example of Jesus in their giving, living a life of full service to Him each day and trusting in God’s provision to accomplish all He has set us to do. Thank you for your prayers and giving.

As we draw to the end of 2011, my family and staff at Jubilee wishes you the greatest joy as you reflect on the greatest of all the gifts-even our Lord Jesus Christ.

Ndola Jubilee Centre welcomes govt’s anti-corruption drive

By Abigail Chaponda in Ndola

NDOLA Jubilee Centre executive Pastor Lawrence Temfwe has said figures by the African Union suggest that US $5,000 is lost every second in Africa due to corruption.

In a statement sent from Morocco, Marrakesh where he is attending the fourth Conference of State Parties, Pastor Temfwe said statements by the Patriotic Front government about their desire to tackle corruption are consistent with demands being made in Morocco by the United Nation Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) Civil Society Coalition.

Pastor TemfweHe said corruption harms the lives of the poorest sections of society and can undermine trust between the state and citizens.

“Corruption thrives on secrecy, when undisturbed by public access to information about government and business activities, which is why we welcome the commitment made by the government to put in place access to information laws. This is consistent with Article 13 of the UN Convention against Corruption,” he said.

Pastor Temfwe called on the government to widely publicize its commitments and efforts under the Convention against Corruption which would include measures on public procurement, public budget management, prevention of corruption and other measures the government is putting in place.

He emphasized the role of grassroots groups in combating corruption and called on the government to find a way of raising awareness of anti-corruption mechanisms and forming a broad partnership with communities, including schools, churches, markets, hospitals, local police, judiciary and family.

“The UN Convention against Corruption is a far-reaching convention, but isn’t widely known among citizens. It’s in everyone’s interests to tackle corruption – so we need the broadest coalition and most effective mechanisms possible,” he said.

Pastor Temfwe said as a board governor of Evangelical Fellowship, the church must play a leading role countering corruption through its preaching and playing its role as an advocate.

“After all our Lord Jesus Christ is called the Chief Advocate because he not only pleads for our salvation but also desires that we enjoy life to the full as family, as community and as nation. His followers must do no less by advocating for a nation free of corruption, is just, and cares for the needy children, widows and the poor who are most affected by corruption,” said Pastor Temfwe

Ablution block project

Mapalo Bread of Life Community School has 916 orphans and vulnerable children and 200 Sunday School children who need proper toilets when they are at school and church.

100_6657The vision of building proper ablution block was birthed in order to mitigate the effect water born diseases such as cholera to our children while at the learning institution; as some of our children come to school without shoes or sandals.

This ablutions block will also help our children when they go to high schools to use those modern toilets properly as the homes they come from only uses pit latrines.

We have completed about 70% of the work. Our children are temporally using two toilets from part of one section of the toilets as the need to use them is urgent. (Our pit latrines is full).

Our Praise and Prayer items include

· Thank you so much for partnering with us and your contributions.

· Pray with us that we complete the ablutions block soon. We are praying that we put doors, plaster inside, toilet pans, soaker way etc ….

· Pray for our wonderful school teachers who volunteer tirelessly who only get allowances when we have the funds that the Lord will be providing allowances even as they serve faithfully.

Newsletter September 2011

What a privilege! A few weeks ago, Lawrence was at a gathering of 500 youths who most likely were hungry physically because of their circumstance. But most importantly all were thirsty for the word clip_image002of God. Lawrence spoke to them from the book of Daniel chapter one and told them, “Like Daniel you’re also young, sharp looking, intelligent and able to be trained.” The youths responded with shouts of Hallelujahs. Lawrence continued, “You all competent and gifted because God does not make junk.” At the end of workshop 60 young people gave their lives to the Lord. And 79 were tested for HIV and AIDS virus. Indeed there is hope for our nation as long as youths who love God remain committed to their God despite their material lack. Please continue to pray for the young people who attended the conference that they remain resolute in their love for the Lord.

Photo: Lawrence in yellow staying in step with the young people as they dance to the glory of the Lord)

Meanwhile, I spent most part of last two months visiting the children under the Jubilee Centre sponsorship program. It has been a while since I had visited them in their homes. I just did not know what I was missing. It was spiritually enlightening. When I asked Angela Mulenga what I would pray for her she responded “pray that I have wisdom.” I also heard a story of a boy who used to follow his elder brother Henry to school and sit outside by the window and listen to what the teacher was teaching in class, until his brother knocked off. One day this young boy went to his pastor and said to her, “I also want to go school like my elder brother. Today, he too is in school and was so happy when I gave him a school bag and supplies when I visited. Christian life is about touching one life at a time.”

The highlight of the last two months was being part of a three days workshop for 27 double orphans’ children whose ages are from 8 to 18 years old. We had a gifted teacher who helped me and my co-clip_image004worker Meluse in how to help children who have suffered trauma begin the long walk towards wholeness. I was very happy to be part of this workshop although I cried a lot as the children who were in my team passed on me the pain they have gone through as a result of losing their parents. I left the conference with much hope for them because of the foundation we provided that they start a new life. We will follow them through with their guardians for the next three months.

The boys are well. Daniel starts his examinations from the 28th October through the first week of November. Pray for him. Samuel swimming season has started and they have already done one gala. Lawrence is volunteering at Jubilee Centre Micro-Loan program while pursuing his degree Tebe's iphone 190in business studies online. David has been rather quite since he started his second year at Moody Bible Institute. His father brought us some great pictures when he visited with him in August.

Thank for praying and encouragements.

Water shortage in chibuluma

Water shortage in chibuluma- chibuluma

The chibuluma community is a peri-urban area situated on the south east of kalulushi district. This area does not have piped water, which must be supplied by the local water supply but inadequate. The water is major problem in chibote compound.

The population of chibote is close to 12,000 and most of the people rely on open wells for water use both drinking and household use. This is a danger to human healthy as water is life to human basic needs.

Jubilee Center has come to our rescue in our community by sinking a borehole at our church. This is helping almost a half population of the community and the borehole is being overworked as it is the only one in the community relied upon. The community is benefiting from this borehole from as early as 04:00hrs up to 23:00hrs in the morning. See the pictures attached.

Community comments:

“Without this borehole we could have suffered a lot to fetch water, we could have been traveling long distance of over 2km to draw water at the stream. And this very dangerous posing danger to human health which can cause diarrhea and other water born diseases”. Says, Emma the pre-school teacher at chibote pre-school.

“The borehole is being overworked and this will wear out the pipes very soon and we shall suffer more because we don’t know anyone who can repair this borehole,” says mwansa Moses.

We have no control over this borehole as the community is desperate in need of water and we have failed to put measures of closing and opening times. Says Pastor Joseph Lumayi (Local Church Pastor).

Bana Kaluba the mother of 3 says, I came around 05: hrs in the morning and upto now I haven’t drawn water due to line, I have been waiting because there about 20 people ahead of me. Women are mostly found here we end up quarrelling here sometime over water lineup.

This water is the cleanest water for use unlike the water from Nkana water supply the situation seem to be worse due to eratic supply of the comoditywhich is drawn from kitwe about 21km- kafue river. Now that we have been given handpumps  by Jubilee Center, we have seen women and children line up for Clean water rather than from the stream which is unhealthy to the community causing dierriarhia

Suzen’s Story

If you are to go to the Village of Kawama and meet Suzen you will meet a woman full of life and smiles. Life has not been an easy journey for her though. About a year ago she found out she had Suzen at her homecontracted HIV from her husband. When her husband found out about this he left her alone with her three children (ages four, seven, and eleven). She was very discouraged by the stigma that came with the disease, because rumors began to circulate. To make matters worse, her house was becoming unsafe to live in. In the rainy season the water leaked in, and it was in danger of collapsing due to large cracks. However, she continued to remember that “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son…” These words helped to sustain her hope because she realized that “even if I was the only woman on earth, Jesus still would have died for me because he loves me so much.”

Back in 2006, Pastor Joyce of Revival Worship Centre was going door to door to evangelize to her community. It was then that she met Suzen and led her to know Christ. She became part of the church and volunteered to visit members of the church with HIV and offer home-based care. So despite the stigma, the church has been a constant encouragement to her as they support her family and give her hope. Because of Jubilee Centre, her children have been able to receive the money needed to attend school. She also receives medications that she needs and is able to stay active, selling bananas and vegetables at the market. At the end of July, she moved into a house that was built for her by JC and Habitat for Humanity.

She no longer worries about the dust and rain coming in which previously threatened the health of herself and her family. Through this experience she has learned to trust in Christ to sustain her both physically and spiritually. She is so grateful for her church and for the donors that have made the house possible.

“May God richly bless you and add years to your life!” she said, “Please continue to be generous because there are others like me that need hope.” Because of the faithful efforts of Christians in Zambia and across the world, Suzen has been empowered to live life to the fullest, even in hard circumstances.
